  • This sketch has been inspired from a scene that greeted the artist during her wanderings in the world heritage city of Galle, Sri Lanka. She stumbled upon this dignified, elderly, Sri Lankan lady bent over a pillow with pins stuck in them. On a closer look, one could see that the pins were holding the threads of dozens of bobbins hanging over the side of the pillow. The lady was focused on the task in front of her and her eyes did not waver even as onlookers stepped closer to see the beautiful lace that was being created. Bobbin lace or pillow lace is a traditional Portuguese art and was brought to Sri Lanka by the Portuguese when they occupied the country in the 16th century.

The artist has captured the skill, passion, focus and dignity of the Sri Lankan lady beautifully and detailed it with the bobbins hanging on the side of the pillow. This black and white sketch pays a tribute to working women who continue to live their passion into their twilight years with grace and dignity
