Abstract & Material Studies

Explorations of abstraction through material, surface, and process, where form, rhythm, and texture emerge through making.

  • I often find my paintings take on an energy of their own once I start painting, and this piece was no less.

I had my mosaic pieces spread out in front of me to play around with. Soon the pieces started creating pathways, meandering towards each other, craving to make those connections that the lockdown times prevented us from doing. In the beginning I sought out the perfectly cut pieces, but soon discovered that the irregular ones fitted better in certain places and each piece was useful in its own way regardless of it’s imperfections.

I found that intriguing – can we apply the same principle to our fellow humans, those who we are quick to criticise and those who we consider less than perfect?

  • This painting is done in two layers of fluid acrylics and a stencil. After the first layer of my pour had completely dried, I held the stencil in place and poured the second layer. The stencil helped to control the flow effectively creating the illusion of the face.

  • It can take 1 million years to decompose a CD!

“Sounds of Sustainability” was conceptualized in 2020, inspired by responsible consumption and music’s ability to unite people. Seven CDs represent the seven continents, reflecting connection in times of isolation. The messages revealed on each CD have carefully been chosen to depict how music can spread positivity and improve wellbeing.
